Length of Program

Mental Health PHP duration varies based on symptom severity and progress.

Most clients participate in PHP for 2-4 weeks, though some need longer for complex conditions or slower stabilization.

Duration depends on:

  • Severity and complexity of your mental health condition
  • How quickly symptoms stabilize with treatment
  • Medication effectiveness and adjustment needs
  • Your response to therapy and skill development
  • Safety concerns and risk level
  • Co-occurring substance use or medical issues
  • Your insurance coverage

We don’t rush your healing. You’ll step down to the next level when you’re stable and ready—not according to an arbitrary timeline.

After PHP: Continuing Your Journey

PHP provides intensive stabilization, but mental wellness is an ongoing process. Transitioning to appropriate continuing care is essential.

Step Down to Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

When symptoms are stable, most clients transition to Mental Health IOP, which provides:

  • Continued treatment 3 hours per day, 3-5 days per week
  • Less intensity while maintaining significant support
  • More independence to manage work, school, or family
  • Ongoing therapy and psychiatric care
  • Practice of skills with gradually decreasing support

This transition is seamless at Guardian Recovery—you often continue with the same treatment team.

Join Alumni Programming

Guardian Recovery’s alumni community provides lifelong support, connection, and resources for continued wellness.

Your relationship with Guardian Recovery doesn’t end when treatment does.

What dual diagnosis treatment looks like:

  • Assessment of both mental health and substance use
  • Integrated treatment plans addressing both conditions
  • Understanding how mental health and addiction influence each other

  • Medication management accounting for both diagnoses
  • Group therapy addressing both challenges

Common Questions About Mental Health PHP

Clear, straightforward answers to help you understand what to expect, how the process works, and how we support you every step of the way.

Can I work or go to school during PHP?

PHP’s intensive schedule (5-6 hours daily, 5-7 days/week) typically makes full-time commitments difficult. Many clients take medical leave or short-term disability. Your mental health is the priority—work and school can wait while you stabilize.

Our team monitors your symptoms daily. If you deteriorate or become unsafe, we’ll adjust your treatment, increase support, or recommend inpatient hospitalization if needed. Your safety always comes first.

Not necessarily. We create safety plans to help you manage thoughts without hospitalization. We only recommend inpatient care if you have a specific plan and intent to harm yourself and can’t commit to safety. Honesty about your thoughts allows us to help you.

Your hospital treatment team, along with Guardian Recovery’s admissions staff, will assess whether you’re stable enough for PHP. Generally, if you’re not actively psychotic, not immediately suicidal, and can follow safety plans, PHP is appropriate.

Medication adjustments are common in PHP—that’s partly why you’re here. Our psychiatrists will monitor closely and make changes as needed, with frequent follow-up to assess effectiveness.

Most insurance plans cover partial hospitalization for mental health. Our admissions team verifies coverage before admission and explains your benefits.
