Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg MSA & Hillsborough County Drug Use & Overdose Statistics

According to data collected from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), between 2005-2010, of the 2.3 million people age 12 and older, the Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg MSA reported that approximately 188,000, or 8.1%, had a substance use disorder diagnosis. (1)

Approximately 326,000 (14%) of MSA residents reported past-year illicit drug use. This estimate includes cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens, inhalants, marijuana, and psychotherapeutic prescription drugs used for non-medical purposes. (2) The rate of past-year marijuana use was just over 10%, and the non-medical use of prescription painkillers was 4.6%. These rates were similar to those of Florida and the entire United States.

Drug overdose deaths in Hillsborough County increased threefold, from 165 in 2015 to 538 in 2020. (3)

Florida Drug Use & Overdose Statistics

According to the State of Florida’s Bureau of Vital Statistics, of the 44,577 deaths investigated by the state’s medical examiners in 2020, toxicology results revealed that 14,708 of those individuals had illicit or prescription drugs present in their system at the time of death (nearly one-third of fatalities). (4) Although these drugs were not necessarily the cause of death, this finding is significant, as it reveals the extent of drug use among death investigations. Furthermore, most overdose victims had more than one drug in their system. In 2020, 7,231 overdose deaths related to any drug were reported statewide. (5)

Opioid Overdose Statistics

Since the turn of the century, Florida has experienced increasing drug overdose fatalities related to prescription and illicit opioids. In 2020, 6,089 opioid-caused deaths were reported, a 17.5-fold increase from 2000, which was approximately 350. (6)(7) The Florida Department of Health issued a Public Health and Safety Alert in July 2022 regarding the considerable increase in fentanyl overdose fatalities throughout the state. (8)

Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA, Hillsborough County & Florida Alcohol Use Statistics

In 2019, 23%, or nearly one-quarter of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater MSA reported past-month binge drinking. (9) That same year, 17.1% of Hillsborough County adults and 18% in the State of Florida reported regular engagement in heavy alcohol misuse or binge drinking. (10)

In 2020, in Florida, the most frequently occurring substance found in decedents was alcohol, which was present in more than 6,000 deaths. (11)

Choosing a Drug & Alcohol Rehab Center in Town ‘n’ Country, Florida

Reputable rehab centers typically possess specific qualities essential for individuals to receive effective, customized treatment. Look for the following attributes when investigating addiction treatment options to increase your chances of success:

  • A multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, licensed therapists, and experienced support staff.
  • Integrated treatment for co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders.
  • Multiple levels of care or programs that meet individual needs, such as medical detox and inpatient and outpatient treatment.
  • Low staff-to-patient ratio, indicating more treatment providers are available to individual clients.
  • Customized treatment plans tailored to the individual.
  • Evidence-based methodologies, such as behavioral therapy, group therapy, medication-assisted treatment, 12-step immersion, etc.
  • Aftercare plans that include ongoing therapy, support groups, alumni activities, etc.

Checking Accreditation & Licensing

When researching treatment centers, ensure they are nationally accredited by the Joint Commission or Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities. Rehab and detox facilities are regulated by the Department of Children and Families, which requires the following services be inspected and licensed:

  • Medical detox.
  • Other medical services.
  • Educational services.
  • Group and individual therapy.
  • Planning for and administering substance misuse treatment.

Detox & Rehab Options in Town ‘n’ Country, Florida

Streamlined treatment requires rehab facilities to offer multiple levels of care using a step-down approach that reduces treatment intensity at each level. For example, individuals may begin treatment with a highly-structured inpatient program and end with flexible outpatient group therapy sessions.

Intervention

An intervention is a staged, structured meeting of family members and friends devised to confront a loved one about their substance misuse and urge them to seek professional treatment. Rehab facilities often offer intervention services to help families navigate this process and help them immediately get admitted into an intensive treatment program.

Medical Detox

In medical detox, clients undergo a clinically-monitored withdrawal under the 24/7 supervision of a team of licensed medical professionals. Many detox facilities combine therapeutic methodologies and holistic approaches in addition to medical treatment options. You may need to determine whether you’ll be admitted to a privately-owned or government-funded detox center and whether it will be conducted in conjunction with a comprehensive treatment program or a separate hospital setting.

Residential & Inpatient Treatment

Residential or inpatient treatment is often the next appropriate level of care after medical detox. Clients reside around the clock in a treatment center, often for several weeks or months, and follow daily structured itineraries that include therapy, peer group support, and other treatment strategies. Medical professionals, licensed therapists, and support staff facilitate regularly scheduled classes, therapy sessions, and other activities. Commonly used treatment methodologies include individual and family therapy, motivational interviewing, life skills training, and group support.

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Partial hospitalization (PHP) is sometimes the next step down after a residential program has been completed. PHP requires participation in a weekly itinerary, but clients live at their private residences or sober living home.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP) & Outpatient Treatment (OP)

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) is a lower level of intensity than PHP, and therapeutic groups typically meet 3-5 days a week for several hours daily, typically in the morning or evening. Therefore, like PHP, IOP is sometimes the next step down for those who have already been through medical detox and inpatient rehab. However, it can be a standalone treatment option for those needing more flexibility in their weekly schedules.

Regular outpatient treatment is the least intensive level of care but still provides continual support with a focus on relapse prevention. Clients in OP must be high-functioning and wholly accountable for their sobriety at all times.

Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication-assisted treatment is a protocol used to improve patient safety and comfort by alleviating drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves several drugs to treat alcohol and drug dependence. Opioid use disorders can typically be managed with naltrexone, methadone, or Suboxone. Likewise, naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram are commonly used to treat alcohol dependence.

Substance Use Disorder Program Costs in Town ‘n’ Country, Florida

A significant concern individuals have when seeking a comprehensive recovery program is whether their health insurance will pay for treatment and whether they will accrue out-of-pocket expenses. Those without insurance may be eligible for government-funded programs, and the treatment center can often assist with this task.

Privately Funded Treatment

The Florida Department of Children and Families offers residents with drug or alcohol use disorders community-based treatment for those looking for lower-cost and easily accessible care. Although there are potential benefits to public or government-funded programs, such as lower cost and greater accessibility, due to limited resources, these programs typically offer standard treatment that is used for all clients. For example, treatment services are often limited to basic individual therapy sessions, medication-assisted treatment, and 12-step programs. Unfortunately, due to high demand, there are also often extended waiting periods for admission.

Conversely, privately-funded treatment centers offer individualized treatment plans, multiple levels of care, and a wider range of evidence-based therapies and services. There is usually little or no waiting time for clients seeking treatment to be assessed and admitted.

Insurance Coverage

The majority of addiction treatment facilities accept a variety of health insurance providers. These include major and regional carriers, such as Aetna, and government-funded programs, such as Medicaid, that offer coverage for people with specific qualifications. However, seeking treatment while using one of these government programs may significantly limit the network of treatment centers you have to select.
