Over the course of the past several years, Tampa, Florida has been negatively impacted by escalating rates of substance misuse and dependence. The National Survey on Drug Use and Health reports that roughly 326,000 Tampa residents over the age of 12 used an illicit drug within the past year. (1) Of these individuals, 188,000 were classified as having a diagnosable substance use disorder. At CuraSouth, we have responded to increasing rates of addiction throughout the Tampa area by creating an effective and accessible medical detox program for Florida residents of all ages. We combine around-the-clock medical supervision with intensive therapeutic intervention and personalized aftercare planning, laying a solid foundation for continued success in recovery. Substance & Alcohol Use In Tampa, Florida

While substance misuse of all kinds is cause for concern among Florida residents, the state has seen a significant rise in fentanyl-related overdose deaths over the course of the past several years. (2) Fentanyl is a powerful opioid narcotic that is between 80 and 100 times more potent than morphine. As little as two milligrams of fentanyl can result in a fatal overdose. In the year 2020 alone, over 6,150 Florida residents lost their lives to fentanyl overdose. Over the course of the past two years, this number has only continued to increase.

While fentanyl and other opioids are a significant concern among Tampa residents, other chemical substances — predominantly alcohol and cocaine — have proven problematic. The NSDUH Report Metro Brief for the Tampa area reports that rates of binge drinking in Tampa are slightly higher than the statewide and national average.

The American Hospital Association reports that rates of substance use and mental illness are exceedingly high among Tampa Bay and West Central Florida Residents. According to a recent study, “1 in 6 people [in this region] live with depression and 1 in 12 have a substance use disorder.” (3) At CuraSouth, we combine proven detoxification methods with professional therapeutic and psychiatric care, enabling us to effectively treat those with dual diagnosis disorders

The Statewide Drug Policy Advisory Council 2021 Annual Report states, “Data from the National Center for Health Statistics indicated that nationally, compared to previous years, drug overdose deaths increased more than 30 percent in September of 2020 through February 2021.” (4) In 2020, overdose deaths in Florida reached record-breaking highs. There was a reported increase of 37 percent from the year prior — over 7,500 lives were lost in total. In order to prevent fatal drug overdose deaths, action must be taken on a local level. This means an increase in preventative measures along with an increase in available resources, including privately funded detox centers. At CuraSouth, we remain committed to serving Tampa area residents of all ages and walks of life who have been struggling with a substance use disorder of any type or severity.

Drug & Alcohol Treatment in Tampa, Florida

How accessible is drug and alcohol addiction treatment throughout Tampa and surrounding areas? Tampa, Florida is located in Hillsborough County, the 4th most populous county in the state. In 2020 the population totaled 1,459,762. Florida Health reports, “In 2021, the rate per 100,000 of Adult Substance Abuse Beds in Hillsborough County was 1.3 compared to Florida at 1.6.” (5) While the amount of accessible treatment options in the Tampa area has been steadily increasing, the majority of individuals who are in need of professional care do not have immediate access to the treatment they need. At CuraSouth, we have opened our doors in response to this significant shortage, with the hope of serving people of all ages and walks of life who are struggling with substance use and living in the Tampa area.

Choosing a Drug & Alcohol Rehab Center in Tampa, Florida

Finding the best drug and alcohol rehab center in Tampa, Florida is a straightforward process when you know what to look for. We recommend asking yourself the following questions when narrowing down your search.

  1. Is the Tampa rehab center both licensed and accredited through the state of Florida?
  2. Is the rehab center staffed with a team of licensed therapists, medical professionals, and experienced/knowledgeable support staff members?
  3. Does the rehab center cater to a specific demographic, like working professionals or individuals who have been diagnosed with a co-occurring mental illness?
  4. Does the rehab center provide a singular level of care, or does it offer a step-down program for those in need of medical detox services, inpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment?
  5. What is the client-to-staff ratio at the treatment center?
  6. Does the treatment center offer highly individualized care, making sure the needs of each client are adequately met?
  7. Does the rehab center offer holistic treatment options as well as a range of evidence-based therapies?
  8. Does the rehab program prioritize aftercare plans that are both comprehensive and unique to each individual client?

When choosing a drug and alcohol rehab center in Tampa, it is a good idea to consider which level of care will best meet your needs. If you have been struggling with a moderate or severe substance use disorder and you have not previously been to treatment, entering into a medical detox center before transitioning to a higher level of care will likely come recommended. If you were sober for an extended period of time and recently experienced a return to drinking or drug use, a lower level of care, like outpatient treatment, might prove more appropriate. To learn more about which level of care is right for you, contact us today.

Detox & Rehab Options in Tampa, FL

Intervention

For many individuals who have never been to treatment, a professionally facilitated intervention plays an important role on the road to addiction recovery. In order to stage an intervention, you must first locate a licensed and experienced interventionist in Tampa. At CuraSouth we work closely with several local interventionists, and we are happy to point you in the direction of someone who can help.

Detox

In medical detox, a person undergoes a safe and closely monitored drug and/or alcohol withdrawal under the close supervision of a team of licensed medical professionals. Many medical detox centers offer comprehensive care, meaning they combine therapeutic and holistic approaches to recovery with medical treatment options. At CuraSouth we offer an integrated and individualized approach to medical detox, actively preparing our clients to take the next appropriate step on their personal recovery journeys.

Residential & Inpatient Rehab

Residential or inpatient treatment often serves as the next step once a person has been physically stabilized in medical detox. Residential inpatient treatment is an immersive model of treatment where clients come to live amongst other sober peers and participate in a daily treatment program in a facility that is professionally staffed by medical professionals, licensed therapists, group facilitators and support staff. Clients participate in a daily packed schedule of recovery related activities including group therapy, individual therapy, recovery meetings, educational workshops, life skills courses, recreational therapy, social activities, yoga, meditation and 12 Step program education and involvement. There are many reputable residential treatment centers throughout the Tampa area.

Outpatient Treatment

There are three distinct types of outpatient treatment: partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient treatment, and outpatient treatment. The right level of care for you will depend on several factors, including the severity of your substance use disorder, any previous experience with addiction treatment, and the presence of any time-consuming personal obligations, like work, school, or caretaking.

  • Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Partial hospitalization is a level of clinical care that typically follows residential inpatient treatment, and precedes intensive outpatient treatment (IOP). During PHP clients generally take part in a full schedule of recovery-related activities approximately 5 or 6 days a week. These could include individual, group and family therapy, educational workshops, recreational activities, meditation and other recovery programming. While in PHP, guests generally live at a sober living or private home and come to the PHP facility during the day.

  • Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)

Intensive outpatient treatment often follows a higher level of care, such as medical detox, residential inpatient treatment or partial hospitalization treatment. IOP can, however, be a standalone treatment option in some cases. IOP programs are geared toward learning how to reintegrate into the world-at-large as a newly sober individual. Most IOP programs meet between 4 and 5 days a week for several hours each day.

  • Outpatient Treatment (OP)

Outaptient treatment is the lowest level of clinical care available, meaning clients have much more flexibility and freedom than they would find in inpatient rehab, PHP, or IOP. Outpatient treatment programs typically meet between 2 and 3 days a week for several hours each day, and focus more on relapse prevention training and the development of healthy coping mechanisms. Many outpatient programs offer vocational training or education placement services, helping clients reintegrate into society.

MAT & Suboxone

Medication Assisted Treatment, also known as MAT, refers to the use of certain medications to help facilitate the withdrawal and/or recovery process. Medications like Suboxone can be used to help eliminate severe withdrawal symptoms while reducing drug cravings and minimizing the risk of relapse in early sobriety. For opioid dependencies, which includes prescription opioids  (such as OxyContin, Oxycodone and Percocet, among others) and illicit opiates (such as heroin), medications like Suboxone and Subutex might prove effective.

Both Suboxone and Subutex contain buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist, which means that it satisfies the brain’s craving for an opioid and allows a person to avoid severe opioid withdrawal symptoms, but does not produce a high. Suboxone is beuprenorphine combined with naloxone. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist, which means that it blocks the effects of opioids at the receptor sites, making it difficult to abuse. Both Suboxone and Subutex have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat opioid use disorder (OUD).

Substance Use Disorder Program Costs in Tampa, Florida

Privately Funded

If you are currently insured through a major regional or national provider, finding a privately funded Tampa rehab might be the best option for you. When choosing a privately funded rehab center you have access to more individualized and comprehensive care. There are privately funded detox and rehabilitation centers across the country, and you are able to choose one based on your unique clinical needs. Provided services are generally more integrated, and there is a bigger focus on aftercare and continued sobriety once treatment concludes.

Public & State Funded

Public and state-funded treatment options are ideal for those who are uninsured and who cannot afford any out-of-pocket treatment costs. While affordability is an indisputable benefit to this type of program, accessibility often proves to be a hurdle. As rates of substance dependence climb throughout Tampa, Florida, it becomes increasingly difficult to find an open bed in state-funded detox and rehabilitation centers. There are often waitlists, and for those with moderate or severe addictive disorders, waiting patiently for a spot to become available might not be a reasonable option.

Insurance Based

Most privately funded detox centers and residential rehabs in Tampa, Florida and surrounding areas accept insurance from major regional and national providers. If you are interested in learning more about the services offered by CuraSouth and covered by your current provider, contact us today for a free, no obligation health insurance benefit check

Medicaid & Medicare

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states, “Medicare is a medical insurance program for people over 65 and younger disabled people and dialysis patients. Medicaid is an assistance program for low-income patients’ medical expenses.” (7) Some treatment programs in Tampa, Florida accept Medicaid and/or Medicare, though utilizing one of these government programs will harshly limit the network of treatment centers you are able to choose from.
