Substance Dependency Detox

Are you or a loved one considering a substance dependency detox? Substance dependency is one of the most serious and devastating public health threats that our country faces on a day-to-day basis. According to the National Institutes of Health and the US Department of Health and Human Services, 10 percent of all American citizens have suffered from a diagnosable substance abuse disorder at one point in their lives. This equates to around 23 million men and women across the country. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) includes a list of diagnostic criteria for substance dependence, as outlined in an article published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

The medically accepted criteria for substance dependence are as follows:

  • Taking the substance for a longer period of time than intended and in larger amounts than intended
  • Attempting to cut back or quit but being unable to do so
  • Experiencing intense psychological cravings
  • Spending a great deal of time obtaining, using and recovering from the effects of a chemical substance
  • Failing to keep up with personal obligations and responsibilities
  • Continuing to use chemical substances despite personal consequences related to substance use
  • A lack of motivation to participate in activities and hobbies that were previously enjoyed
  • An increase in risk-taking behaviors
  • Continuing to use chemical substances despite existing physical and psychological health problems or repeated warnings from healthcare professionals
  • Developing a physical tolerance over time
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when substance use is stopped abruptly

Men and women who experience between two or three of the above-listed symptoms are said to have a mild substance abuse disorder. Four or five symptoms is indicative of a moderate substance abuse disorder, and if you or your loved one is suffering from six or more of the symptoms the substance abuse disorder has progressed and is considered severe. No matter how severe a substance dependency has become CuraSouth is available to help.

Substance Abuse & Dependence
Facts & Statistics

According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 22 million Americans over the age of 12 struggled with a diagnosable substance abuse disorder in the year 2005 alone. Since then, rates of substance abuse and dependency have only continued to increase. The same survey suggests that there as of the year 2020 there are several notable areas of concern. For example, rates of adolescent prescription drug abuse are on the rise, and military veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders at extremely high rates. At CuraSouth we offer demographic-specific detox services, catering to the unique needs of men and women of any age and from any walk of life. The personalized care we offer cannot be easily found in any state-funded detox facility or traditional hospital setting. We treat all existing symptoms and tackle underlying causes of addiction, addressing the physical, mental and emotional well-being of each and every client.

Substance Abuse Withdrawal
Signs & Symptoms

The symptoms associated with drug and alcohol withdrawal vary on a person-to-person basis.

Commonly experienced symptoms include:

  • Flu-like symptoms including runny nose, watery eyes, nausea and vomiting, low-grade fever, chills, profuse sweating and general feelings of discomfort (flu-like symptoms are usually associated with opioid withdrawal)
  • Insomnia and other sleep-related issues
  • Changes to appetite, which can lead to temporary weight loss or weight gain
  • Severe mood swings, often characterized by irritability and agitation
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Muscle aches and pain
  • Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
  • Uncontrollable shaking and body tremors
  • In severe cases (often only the case with alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal) life-threatening symptoms like seizures and coma can occur

Is Medical Detox Always Necessary?

Regardless of which type of chemical substance is being abused, medically monitored detox is always a necessary first step on every individual journey of addiction recovery. The symptoms associated with drug and alcohol withdrawal can be severe and unpredictable, and in order for serious health-related complications to be avoided these symptoms must be closely overseen by an experienced team of medical professionals. The vast majority of men and women who attempt to detox in an at-home setting return to substance use before the withdrawal process has run its course. Both physical and psychological symptoms can be severely uncomfortable, and returning to substance use helps alleviate these symptoms (because the body has adjusted to having chemical substances present). Of course, this simply exacerbates the vicious cycle of addiction in the long run. The only way to overcome substance dependency long-term is by undergoing treatment in a multi-phased continuum of clinical care – beginning with detox.

Substance Dependency Detox
Treatment Options

Treatment methods that we employ depend heavily on several factors, including:

  • What type of chemical substance was being abused
  • The severity and length of the substance abuse disorder
  • Whether or not there are any pre-existing and underlying physical or mental health conditions
  • Whether or not a client is sensitive to certain medications
